The Italian composer and conductor Enrico Mainardi (1897-1976) is one of the most important cellists of the 20th century. His recording of Franz Schubert's "Sonata for Violoncello and Piano in A minor (Arpeggione)", originally released by Deutsche Grammophon, with piano accompaniment by Guido A. Borciani, is now considered a legendary recording: Mainardi balances between a strict, serious interpretation and romantic expression – with an unmistakable sound reminiscent of a viola, fast vibrato and precise intonation. Further recordings of the "Arpeggione Sonata" are available from Mainardi, including the live recording from Salzburg from 1959. But the recording, made on 8 and 9 October 1950 under the direction of Richard Degenkolbe at the Deutsches Museum in Munich, illustrates Mainardi's musical sincerity and his mission: "My principle and my goal is to be at the service of music and not to use it to make a name for myself." Gramophone writes: "Mainardi plays with his usual refinement and elegance and his finely drawn, aristocratic tone, and it is a great pleasure to hear his 'thoughtful', dreamy phrasing in several passages, especially in the first movement."
One of the greatest cellists of the 20th century, Enrico Mainardis Arpeggione Sonata by Franz Schubert, accompanied by Guido Borciani on Deutsche Grammophon, is reissued. In this legendary recording, Mainardi balances between rigorous and serious interpretation, and romantic expression, with a distinctive tone reminiscent of viola, fast vibrato and accurate intonation. Mainardi has other recordings of Schuberts Arpeggione Sonata, including the Salzburg live performance in 1959, but this recording illustrates his musical truthfulness with his mission My principle and aim is to be at the service of music and not to use it for the sake of showing myself.
Analogphonic commissioned Rainer Maillard (Emil Berliner Studios) to edit the Universal Music master tapes. The remastering does justice to the outstanding musical quality of the recording in all respects and sets new standards in terms of sound. The LP reissue of "Schubert - Arpeggione Sonata In A Minor, D821" was pressed on high-quality 180 gram vinyl (33 rpm) by Pallas Group GmbH in Germany.
"Mainardi plays with his accustomed refinement and elegance, and fine-drawn, aristocratic tone, and there is much pleasure to be got from his musing, dreamy phrasing of several passages, particularly in the first movement." - Gramophone
