Cellist Johanna Martzy is joined by pianist Jean Antonietti for this recording of Sonatas by Beethoven and Mozart.
Johanna Martzy (1924-1979) is considered one of the most underrated violinists of her time, as the great Glenn Gould also confirmed. Trained at the renowned Liszt Academy in Budapest, she won first prize at the Geneva Competition in 1947 and played under the direction of the young Leonard Bernstein in 1958. The extraordinary talent of the Hungarian, whose career began early and was marked by all kinds of low blows in addition to great ovations before she died almost unnoticed at the age of only 55, was evident in the few commercial recordings she made. All recordings were made in their heyday, and most of them achieved cult status after their short careers. Deutsche Grammophon's recording of Beethoven, Mozart – Sonatas For Violin And Piano, with Dutch pianist Jean Antonietti, is no exception.
The last and by no means least of the modern Hungarian school of violin playing, Johanna Martzy made relatively few commercial recordings. But all of them were made in her prime, and most of them acquired a legendary, and cult status after her short career. This Deutsche Grammophon - Beethoven(op.30-3) and Mozart (KV 376) Sonatas with pianist Jean Antonietti is no exception; she was devoted to Beethoven and Mozart, and her recitals often included the Sonatas by two composers. Martzy and Antonietti played two sonatas beautifully, their interpretations are well balanced, transparent and, in the best sense of the word, simple.
After a long wait, the South Korean label Analogphonic makes this wonderful recording available again. Analogphonic commissioned Maarten de Boer to edit the Universal Music master tapes. The audiophile remastering at Emil Berliner Studios does justice to the outstanding musical quality of the recording in all respects and proves how extraordinarily good stereophonic mono recordings can sound.
