Cutting at Emil Berliner Studio and Mastering from the Original Masters of Universal Music!
The classical music world is rich in excellent recordings of Mendelssohn's E minor Violin Concerto. The interpretation by the British musician Alfredo Campoli (1906-1991), who is considered a violinist of the greatest individuality and versatility, is considered by many experts and music lovers to be one of the best recordings ever. The same applies to his interpretation of Max Bruch's "Scottish Fantasy", which would also have been worthy of a Pablo de Sarasate, to whom the composer dedicated the work. The Korean label Analogphonic has now taken on this legendary recording, which is based on the popular Universal Music recording from 1958.
Gramophone writes: "Campoli plays beautifully – especially the finale is extremely precise and brilliant. His lyrical feeling in the slow movement and his virtuosity in the finale are as evident as the excellence of the accompaniment under Sir Adrian Boult. There are many successful accents and the outstanding soloist plays great throughout. His interpretation of Bruch's "Scottish Fantasy" is no less good, and the sound recording is surprisingly fresh." Jonathan Woolf of Music Web International also assesses the recording extremely positively: "Certainly the Mendelssohn concerto was Campoli's parade discipline ... and this stereo recording from 1958 is extremely appreciated. Campoli's tone is deliciously sweet, and he typically has interesting ideas in the passages. As always, the slow movement is the heart of the whole, with loving lyricism always in the foreground. The finale is balanced, fluid and nimble – but not flashy. The "Scottish Fantasy" was a work that Campoli recorded only once. He is an expressive host who warmly shapes the "MacBruch" melodies into a delightful effect. The scherzo is played with pure elegance, and there are some beautiful diminuendos in the Andante sostenuto. He was undoubtedly the most dashing British violinist of his generation."
Analogphonic commissioned Maarten de Boer to edit the Universal Music master tapes. The remastering at Emil Berliner Studios does justice to the outstanding musical quality of the recording in all respects and sets new standards in terms of sound. The LP reissue of "Mendelssohn - Violin Concerto, Bruch - Scottish Fantasia" by Alfredo Campoli, Adrian Boult and the London Philharmonic Orchestra was pressed on high-quality 180 gram vinyl (33 rpm) by Pallas Group GmbH in Germany.
"Campoli plays most beautifully - the finale, in particula, is accurate and brillant in the xtreme.. Campoli's sweet-toned account of the Mendelssohn has given pleasure for many years. His lyrical feeling in the slow movement and his virtuosity in the finale are as self-evident as is the excellence of the accompaniment under Sir Adrian Boult. There are many felicitous ouches and the disincguished soloist plays magnifiently throughout. His account of the Brunch Scottish Fantasia is no less fine, and he recorded sound is amazingly fresh" - The Gramophone Magazine
