At the beginning of 2025, Andreas Scholl, one of the world's most renowned countertenors, and Edin Karamazov, the master lutenist, met at LowSwing Studio to record "In Darkness". The album marks a milestone: It is the first vinyl release with the voice of Andreas Scholl, whose previous recordings were only available in digital formats. Scholl, who is known for his pure tone and emotional depth, and Karamazov, who gained widespread popularity through his collaborations with Sting, the Hilliard Ensemble and many others, share a musical friendship that goes back more than three decades. Their performances exude the confidence, subtlety and deep understanding that only years of collaboration can produce. Guy Sternberg, producer, engineer and founder of LowSwing, describes "In Darkness" as "a singer-songwriter album of the 17th century".
"In Darkness" contains a collection of folk songs from the Baroque and Renaissance periods, including works by John Dowland, the most famous English composer of the Renaissance. Although both artists had already interpreted some of these songs in the past, this recording reveals a new expressiveness – "In Darkness" was recorded live at the new LowSwing studio in Berlin directly on master tape, without editing or manipulation. The listener is confronted with a pure, unadulterated performance: two mature artists at the peak of their creative power, without studio tricks or "cosmetic" embellishments. The numbered and strictly limited 140-gram LP (45 rpm) was mastered at Emil Berlin Studios, cut on lacquer foil by Sidney Claire Meyer and pressed at the Pallas record factory. The booklet contains detailed information about the mixing console, recording equipment as well as the miking technology and the effects devices used.
LowSwing Records is a young record label dedicated to the love of music in analogue format. LowSwing productions are recorded and mixed on analogue tape and then cut directly onto vinyl – driven by respect and passion for purist recording techniques. The centerpiece of the label is the LowSwing Recording Studio in Berlin (www.lowswing.de), where owner Guy Sternberg is dedicated to exciting new artists with the production values of yesteryear.
