Masaaki Suzuki & Bach Collegium Japan Mozart Requiem

Mozart's Requiem, written in 1791, is one of the core treasures of European musical culture. Of course, it owes its outstanding status to its musical qualities. But the circumstances of its creation also contributed to its fame. Very soon rumours circulated that a mysterious unknown person had commissioned the work from Mozart. Then the composer fell seriously ill during the composition process, died and left the work as a torso. The only thing that is certain is that the first performance took place only a few days after his death at a memorial service for Mozart. At that time, the performers still used the unfinished score, but very soon Mozart's widow engaged first Joseph Eybler, later Franz Xaver Süßmayr, to complete the work. In 1800, the Requiem appeared in print with Süßmayr's additions. To this day, this is the most frequently performed version of the work, although it has received more and more criticism over the years and decades. For the present recording, Masaaki Suzuki's son Masato has created a new completion on the basis of the Eybler and Süßmayr versions.
