With his uniquely intimate piano recordings, Berlin-based pianist Nils Frahm became a star of the international neo-classical music scene. His studio recordings are only a fraction of what can be expected at a Nils Frahm concert. Frahm's heart lies in improvisation, in the magic of the moment in which his fingers, inspired by the space and the audience, create new compositions.
"Spaces" is an ode to the joy of live playing, an expression of the joy of experimentation and at the same time an answer to his fans' question for a record that reflects the experience of a Nils Frahm concert.
Contrary to the conventions of a traditional live album, "Spaces" was recorded over a two-year period using portable tape recorders and cassette decks in various locations. These moments were later assembled in his Berlin studio into a kind of collage of field shots. Sometimes with surprising moments such as string-hammering toilet brushes or a cough from the audience.
