"Many people in the West know little about the vibrant musical cultures of the East. The traditional music of South Korea found in "Darha Nopigom" uses 12-tone scales, but the pitch and intervals are different from their Western counterparts, as are the "modes" used to determine the key. Together with the rhythmic flexibility and the way the instruments are strung, this gives the music an otherworldly quality. As explained in the excellent accompanying texts, Byungki Hwang (1936-2018) was a celebrated composer and performer who plays a 12- or 17-string gayageum in three tracks. In addition, a geomungo (zither), an hourglass-shaped drum called a janggu, a daegeum (flute) and three pieces with singing can be heard. The music is extremely diverse, using both traditional material and contemporary expressions, but even in the faster sections there is an underlying current of quiet contemplation, and this really is an extraordinary album, full of beautiful music, beautifully played." - Rob Pennock, Classical Source
