First box set of Mainard's Bach Cello Suites of legendary recordings from Archiv Produktion. The 4LP box set includes recording information sheets in a side-slip box with individual jackets.
As can be easily inferred from his career path, Enrico Mainardi was a cellist whose artistic viewpoint was a grafting of the German school of cello playing influenced by Neue Sachlichkeit to the musical background of his motherland Italy. He recorded the monaural cycle for the Archiv label between April 1950 and October 1955. Mainardi's Bach is leisurely and contemplative. His playing meditates on the auspicious meaning of the work - it is musical delta of courteous low notes, a magical prayer of an aged monk. This is a masterful performance, and its value is somewhat different from the performances of today.
The Italian composer and conductor Enrico Mainardi (1897-1976) is one of the most important cellists of the 20th century. Mainardi was born in Milan and studied at the Verdi Conservatory there. At the age of 13 he performed for the first time as a soloist in front of an audience. Three years later, his collaboration with Max Reger led to the world premiere of his cello Sonata, Op.116. Later, Enrico Mainardi accepted a professorship at the Accademia Santa Cecilia in Rome. Together with the pianist Edwin Fischer and the violin virtuoso Georg Kulenkampff, he formed a trio known throughout Europe. When Kulenkampff passed away, Wolfgang Schneiderhan took his place. "Bel Canto on the cello" – this seems to be the most apt comment that one had heard from Mainardi after a concert. The sound of his cello is of remarkable flexibility and warmth, almost like a beautiful voice. Nevertheless, every single phrase is perfectly formed. His inspired performance gives every interpretation something magical.
Analogphonic commissioned Rainer Maillard to edit the universal Music master tapes. The audiophile remastering of the new version at Emil Berliner Studios does justice to the outstanding musical quality of the recording in all respects. The records of the 4-LP box were pressed at Pallas GmbH in Germany on high-quality 180-gram vinyl (33 rpm).
