There are music projects that fail because they are too ambitious. There are music projects that fail because the production would be far too expensive. And there are music projects that are extremely ambitious, indecently expensive, and still succeed. This album is one of them. But first things first: Behind Four Seasons In Jazz are Gary Koh of loudspeaker manufacturer Genesis Advanced Technologies in the USA and Wuti Larnroongroj of Brilliance Music in Thailand as financial sponsors. The two complained that there are hardly any new records in the ultimate direct-to-disc process, in which the music is recorded live in the studio and cut directly into a lacquer film for LP production.
The background to this misery is quite simple: only a few artists dare to do this. Post-processing is impossible and all songs on an LP side have to be played through one after the other without any errors. This requires really fit musicians and long studio time at a time with equipment that is difficult to install on site. Anne Bisson is a seasoned professional as a jazz vocalist on the piano and was hired without further ado for a multi-day session in Bernie Grundmann's studio in Hollywood. The right songs with accompaniment in the form of double bass and drums were quickly found. Michael Ross, as a sound engineer at Grundmann, was responsible for the technology and also recorded the whole thing again in analogue and DSD.
In terms of sound, the result is absolutely terrific! Rarely has one been able to hear a grand piano, a double bass or a timpani so lifelike. This LP on pink vinyl is based on the analogue tapes that were used during the direct cut and were not edited afterwards.
Serendipity plants the seed, careful planning and hard work bring an amazing collaboration to life. Four Seasons In Jazz: Live At Bernie's is the landmark live recording featuring jazz pianist and vocalist Anne Bisson and the finest musicians and engineers in Hollywood. A selection of popular jazz standards and original compositions by the evocative Canadian songstress was recorded direct-to-disc over two days by Bernie Grundman in Hollywood, CA. Legendary engineer Michael C. Ross used a 100% analog recording chain straight to Grundman's all-analog record cutting system to realistically capture every amazing moment.
Bernie Grundman himself supervised the audio-to-disc transfer. This exquisite release is the inspiration of two music lovers and audiophile industry luminaries, Gary L. Koh of Genesis Advanced Technologies (USA) and Wuti Larnroongroj of Brilliance Music (Thailand).
