180 Gram Audiophile Vinyl! Pressed at Pallas in Germany!
A tenor saxophonist who distinguished himself as a member of Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers on the 1972 long player Child’s Dance, Morris made this one strong album as a leader for Groove Merchant. This is spicy soul jazz.
From the mid to late 60s, producer Sonny Lester set the tone for some of the most important jazz formations of the time (Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Orchestra, Chick Corea, Duke Ellington's 70th Birthday Concerto) and also on some of the greatest hits of this genre, often by organist Jimmy McGriff. With the liquidation of the Solid State Label in 1971, Sonny Lester founded the aptly named Groove Merchant label, named after a composition that Jerome Richardson wrote for the Jones-Lewis Orchestra. Subsequently, he produced some of the most notable soul/jazz and jazz/fusion pieces by McGriff, Richard Groove Holmes, Reuben Wilson, Lonnie Smith, to name a few.
This brilliant album by Ramon Morris, one of the hardest to find at Groove Merchant, was recorded during what many call the classic period of this jazz/funk/soul/fusion era - shortly after appearing with Art Blakey as one of the Jazz Messengers on the '72 Prestige album "Child's Cance" along with Stanley Clarke and Woody Shaw. After that, he also played on the Woody Shaw album, also from 1972, "Song Of Songs".
