180 Gram Audiophile Vinyl! Pressed at Pallas in Germany!
British jazz vocalist Annie Ross is joined by the likes of Zoot Sims, Bill Perkins, Jim Hall, Frankie Capp and more on her solo album recorded in 1959. One of her finest sessions!
Ross is known for her singing style of vocalese; the practice of setting lyrics to an instrumental jazz solo. Her most well-known song, "Twisted", has been recorded by Joni Mitchell , Bette Midler and others.
Besides Ross' interpretations of "I'm Nobody's Baby" and "You Took Advantage Of Me" (among others), the album also includes five instrumentals showcasing the talents of Zoot Sims and Russ Freeman.
The superb Annie Ross is better known as a member of one of the greatest ensembles in vocal jazz — Lambert, Hendricks & Ross — but the singer's solo albums are true gems and "A Gasser!" from 1959 is the best of them all. Miss Ross is in top form and is accompanied here on the saxophone by the great Zoot Sims and large parts of the band by the Lambert, Hendricks & Ross classic "The Swingers". Nevertheless, one should not expect the same vocal acrobatics as with Lambert, Hendricks & Ross recordings.
This is straightforward jazz singing by one of the greatest singers at the height of her skills. From the ironic wit of "Everything I've Got" to the pure perfection and beauty of "You're Nearer"," this album is a must-see for any vocal jazz fan. Highly recommended!
"[J]azz aficionados who know their onions appreciate that [Annie Ross] is one of the best interpreters of standards in the business, so this set from World Pacific back in 1959 featuring Zoot Sims on sax ranks with any "Great American Songbook" you can imagine. The stance here differs from her more famous work as part of Lambert, Hicks & Ross, the crack sextet (with a touch of big-band class provided by Mel Lewis on drums) accenting her vocals with uncanny precision. It may be a half-century old, but it can teach a few tricks to today's crop of wannabees. Mesmerising." - Ken Kessler, Hi-Fi News, Sound Quality Rating: 83%
