Weldon Irvine, also known as Master Wel, was an American composer, playwright, poet, pianist, organist and keyboardist. He was involved with various musical genres including Jazz-Funk, jazz, hip hop, funk, rhythm and blues, and gospel. He served as the bandleader for jazz singer Nina Simone and was a mentor to many New York hip-hop artists, including Q-Tip and Mos Def. He wrote over 500 songs, including the lyrics for "To Be Young, Gifted And Black", performed live for the first time by Simone on the album Black Gold (1970). It has been dubbed the "official" Civil Rights anthem.
The terrific LP "Time Capsule" remains Weldon Irvine's most successful and effective recording. Irvine, an extremely talented multi-instrumentalist and composer, had a musical vision that was unerring, spiritual and funky. As a kind of musical compendium documenting the thought patterns and belief systems of the early 70s, an amazing vitality and timelessness nevertheless surprises thanks to radiant funk grooves that anticipate the emergence of acid jazz. Irvine also talks-sings over several tracks, cementing his influence on future generations of hip-hop. A deeply sincere spirituality pervades all eight tracks of "Time Capsule," analyzing both the affection ("Soul Sisters") and anger ("Watergate") that compete for control of post-Woodstock America. Irvine's gripping keyboard and piano playing further captures the moment and skillfully balances between satisfaction and bitterness. For fans of funk, soul and jazz, there is hardly anything better than this classic from 1973.
The sublime Time Capsule remains Weldon Irvine's most fully realized and influential recording. A supremely talented multi-instrumentalist and composer, Irvine had a musical vision that was unerringly soulful, spiritual, and funky... For fans of funk, soul and jazz, it doesn't get much better than this 1973 classic. - Jason Ankeny, AllMusic
