The city of Kansas, where Count Basie lived, had become the center of vibrant new jazz. A place where the musicians who interpreted this new jazz could join in countless jam sessions from evening to morning and again until evening. A place where musicians such as Walter Page, Benny Moten, Lester Young, Ben Webster, Andy Kirk, Coleman Hawkins and many others could be found working, experimenting and living out their music. That was Count Basie's Kansas, and Benny Carter dedicated his music to this Kansas. He has written a unique modern jazz suite, seasoned with elements of Kansas City Stomp Jazz, tailored to the great raw sound of the Basie Band. For Benny Carter, the various streets and squares of Kansas City, where so many jazz greats have lived and worked, and where so much jazz history has been written, create a certain mood, a memory of the past. For this reason, he named the pieces of this suite after these very streets and squares. The Kansas City of the 20s and 30s is now legendary, and the music that began there has since evolved towards the mainstream of today's jazz. In the music of Benny Carter she has reached her full maturity and magnificence through the dynamic power of the great Basie Band.
