180g High Quality Pressing! Pressed at Pallas in Germany! Re-mastering by Ray Staff at Air Mastering!
Recorded just after Sarah Vaughan joined the Roulette label in 1960, The Divine One found her in exactly the right circumstances to suit her excellent talents. Arranged by Jimmy Jones, who also sits in on piano, the setting was a small group that included one strong voice to accentuate hers -- and no less a strong and clear voice than trumpeter Harry "Sweets" Edison (the perfect accompaniment for Vaughan). The Divine One is mostly a ballads collection, and it includes a few songs that were new to her repertoire -- good choices like "Have You Met Miss Jones?" (aka "Old Jones"), "When Your Lover Has Gone," "Wrap Your Troubles in Dreams," and "Jump for Joy."
"The Divine One" was recorded in 1960, immediately after Sarah Vaughan joined the Roulette label; there she was in just the right environment that suited her excellent talents. Jimmy Jones was responsible for both the arrangements and the piano; in addition there was a small troupe, which also included a strong voice to accentuate theirs – no other (let alone worse) than the strong and clear voice of trumpeter Harry "Sweets" Edison, the perfect accompaniment for Vaughan. "The Divine One" is mainly a ballad collection that also contains a few songs that were new to their repertoire – well-chosen pieces like "Have You Met Miss Jones?" (also known as "Old Jones"), "When Your Lover Has Gone", "Wrap Your Troubles In Dreams" and "Jump for Joy". A great choice from the leftfield area is "Ain't No Use", whereby the R&B song that Big Maybelle was the first to record (Nina Simone only several years later) is interpreted as a torch song, i.e. as a slow, soulful blues song about unrequited love. Roulette soon bugged Vaughan in many different directions – releasing more than a dozen LPs in just a few years – but this encounter with a small band is a gem.
