Charles Tolliver Music Inc Live At The Loosdrecht Jazz Festival (2 LP)

Charles Tolliver started his professional career and at the same time made his debut with saxophone giant Jackie McLean on Blue Note Records in 1964. Since then he has been one of the outstanding trumpeters in jazz and one of the most talented composers/arrangers/bandleaders. He was awarded a Grammy for his Blue Note Records album "With Love".
With a career spanning five decades, he has recorded and/or performed with such renowned artists as Roy Haynes, Hank Mobley, Willie Bobo, Horace Silver, McCoy Tyner, Sonny Rollins, Booker Ervin, Gary Bartz, Gerald Wilson Orchestra, Oliver Nelson, Stanley Cowell, Herbie Hancock, Andrew Hill, Louis Hayes, Roy Ayers, Art Blakey & the Jazz Messengers and was the trumpeter of the great Max Roach for several years.
This LP is jazz of high energy and sincerity. Jazz at it's best, one of Tolliver's (and jazz) masterpieces, a live recording from 1972. On another occasion, Tolliver recorded with another quartet with Stanley Cowell at the piano, and some critics prefer this quartet. Here John Hicks masterfully plays the piano and this quartet is equivalent to the aforementioned one. Hicks balances Tolliver in his energy, the bass playing of Reggie Workman (the bassist of John Coltrane) is also very complex and the drummer Alvin Queen fits perfectly with the other three.
Tolliver's music (which attracts attention throughout the live set) has its connections to the bebop tradition, but it also continues to evolve and can be very passionate. Recommendation!
