Featured in Michael Fremer's Heavy Rotation in the November 2007 Issue of Stereophile! Pressed at Pallas in Germany!
The brilliant young post-bop trumpeter Booker Little is heard here accompanied by an all-star band, including the saxophonist Eric Dolphy, the bassist Ron Carter and the drummer Max Roach, on a set that combines elements of bop and cool jazz, as well as Little's own imaginative flourishes, which display an authority and potential far beyond his mere 23 years.
Booker Little was the first trumpet soloist in jazz to appear with his own sound after the death of Clifford Brown. His early death (he died in 1961 at the age of 23) certainly would have led to a great career. This music is an outstanding, sensitive and modern jazz, one of the best albums created under Little's direction. The pieces are recorded with a lot of feeling from the first note. The album can really meet expectations, it has many musically strong moments and remains interesting throughout. Booker Little had a bold vision of jazz and we will miss his skills even more than before.
