Featured in Michael Fremer's Heavy Rotation in the June 2007 Issue of Stereophile! Pressed at Pallas in Germany!
A cheerful and carefree jazz sound is synonymous with Clark Terry - he always swings, his music is exuberant and pure fun. The brilliant and unmistakable soloist gained his first experience in the lively jazz scene in the St. Louis of the early 40s and was also a source of inspiration for Miles Davis. During the 2nd World War he played in a Navy band and then became known for engagements in the big band of Charlie Barnet (1947/8), in the orchestra and smaller bands of Count Basie (1948-1951) and especially through his collaboration with Duke Ellington (1951-59). The resulting performances and recordings (including "Perdido") are still in the best memory, and already during this time the skilful swing / bopsolist Terry led his first own recording sessions. During the 60s, regular recordings with Clark Terry appeared, including the classic with the Oscar Peterson Trio (Oscar Peterson Trio + One) and some dates with the quintet, which he led together with trombonist Bob Brookmeyer.
This is one of Clark Terry's best albums. Terry had complete control over the musical events, instead of the usual jam session he relied on an octet and arrangements by Yusef Lateef, Budd Johnson and Al Cohn. The band members correspond to their potential and the compositions make active use of the skills of these individual stylists. The repertoire, consisting of compositions by Terry, Duke Jordan, Yusef Lateef and Bob Wilber, is both extraordinary and refreshing - and the interpretations always swing.
"This is one of flugelhornist Clark Terry's finest albums. Terry had complete control over the music and, rather than have the usual jam session, he utilized an octet and arrangements by Yusef Lateef, Budd Johnson and Al Cohn. The lineup of musicians lives up to its potential, and the charts make good use of the sounds of these very individual stylists. The material, which consists of originals by Terry, Duke Jordan, Lateef and Bob Wilber, is both rare and fresh, and the interpretations always swing." - All Music Guide
"...no other album so far has Clark been so fully what he is than on this play of Color Changes." - Nat Hentoff, liner notes
