180g Vinyl! Pressed at RTI!
Pairing with Cannonball Adderley, John Coltrane, Red Garland, Paul Chambers, and Philly Joe Jones, the trumpeter laid the groundwork for the modalism that immediately followed and tailored a genuine modern-jazz masterwork.
The only album by Miles Davis with the original sextet line-up dates back to 1958. Davis played with Cannonball Adderly, John Coltrane, Red Garland, Paul Chambers and "Philly" Joe Jones. Jazz connoisseurs already recognize in this line-up the cornerstone of the later BlueNoteRecords house sound and yet it was surprising how strong the blues influence was on this album. The album became known for the introduction of modal moods into jazz on the eponymous piece "Milestones", which, however, are not found on the other five tracks.
The MFSL remastering sounds fresh and open and not at all as mono as you might expect. The 180-gram vinyl LP has been remastered by Krieg Wunderlich, the cover is stamped with a sequential serial number and is released in a limited edition.
Miles Davis created just one studio album with his original sextet. He made every moment count. Davis at this point was experimenting with modes i.e., scale patterns other than major and minor. Pairing with Cannonball Adderley, John Coltrane, Red Garland, Paul Chambers, and Philly Joe Jones, the trumpeter not only laid the groundwork for the modalism that immediately followed but tailored a genuine modern-jazz masterwork laden with performances among the most explosive of his distinguished career. Due to its sandwiched position between the more famous ‘Round About Midnight and epochal Kind of Blue, Milestones remains, for too many music lovers, an overlooked classic. The Penguin Guide to Jazz selected this album as part of its suggested "Core Collection" calling it "one of the very great modern-jazz albums."
"The calibre of personnel Miles Davis enlisted for his Sextet was the very best. Davis knew he couldn't keep this unit together for long. It was obvious to him that each was developing into a sensation. This was 1958, and history was being made with the emergence of Davis' modal sound. His sweet, open trumpet tone reflects what Davis stood for and explains why he's still the top vote getter in jazz polls around the world. The way he, Cannonball Adderley, Red Garland, and John Coltrane weave melodic lines together has set a standard for those who have followed." - Jim Santella, All About Jazz
