Barney Wilen says he was persuaded to become a musician by his mother's boyfriend, the poet Blaise Cendrars. As a teenager, he founded a jazz club for young people in Nice, where he often performed. In the mid-1950s, he moved to Paris and worked at Club St. Germain with American musicians such as Bud Powell, Benny Golson, Miles Davis and J.J. Johnson.
His burgeoning reputation was cemented in 1957 when he starred with Davis on the soundtrack of the Louis Malle film "Elevator to the Scaffold." Two years later, he collaborated with Art Blakey and Thelonious Monk on the soundtrack to Roger Vadim's "Les Liaisons Dangereuses" (1960).
In addition to Barney Wilen, "Inside Nitty Gritty" features organist Emmanuel Bex and drummer Peter Gritz.
Venus LPs are pressed only once. After the first edition has been sold, the titles will be removed from the catalogue. Collectors should therefore consider buying in good time.

He moved to Paris in the mid-'50s and worked with such American musicians as Bud Powell, Benny Golson, Miles Davis, and J.J. Johnson at the Club St. Germain. His emerging reputation received a boost in 1957 when he played with Davis on the soundtrack to the Louis Malle film Lift to the Scaffold. Two years later, he performed with Art Blakey and Thelonious Monk on the soundtrack to Roger Vadim's Les Liaisons Dangereuses (1960). Wilen began working in a rock-influenced style during the '60s, recording an album entitled Dear Prof. Leary in 1968.
