Australian bassist and singer Nicki Parrott has released numerous albums from the Japanese label Venus Records over the years, covering many different materials and musical styles. The Last Time I Saw Paris is focused on French music, including chanson standards, several songs written by Michel Legrand, and the beautiful title track by Jerome Kern.
The musical atmosphere of French jazz is enhanced by Jacob Fisher's acoustic guitar and Gil Goldstein's accordion. With John Di Martino on piano and Tim Horner on drums, the musicianship is top-notch and the arrangements are sophisticated and very nice. Of course, the star of the show is Nicki, who plays bass and sings beautifully in both English and French.
In June 2000, Nicki began performing on Monday nights at the Iridium Jazz Club with the legendary guitarist and inventor, Les Paul. As part of the Les Paul Trio, Nicki worked side-by-side with guitar greats from Paul McCartney, Slash, Steve Miller to fellow Aussie, Tommy Emmanuel.
Since then she has performed with such notable musicians as Michel Legrand, Joe Wilder, Randy Brecker, Clark Terry, Jose Feliciano, Bucky Pizzarelli, John Pizzarelli, Dick Hyman, Patti Labelle & the New York Pops Orchestra, Harry Allen, Warren Vache, Marlena Shaw, David Krakauer, Ken Peplowski, Ann Hampton Callaway, Bill Mays, Scott Hamilton, Lillian Boutte, Larry Carlton and Houston Person, to name a few.
Venus LPs are pressed only once. After the first edition has been sold, the titles will be removed from the catalogue. Collectors should therefore consider buying in good time.
