Bill Charlap is one of the preeminent jazz pianists of his generation. His encyclopedic knowledge of the American Songbook is second to none, and his beautiful touch, amazing skills and imagination make it a pleasure to listen to him at all times.
Charlap has recorded a number of great albums for Venus Records of Japan with his great New York Trio (with Jay Leonhart and Bill Stewart). For this release, he decided to take a slightly different direction with a drum-less trio featuring guitarist Peter Bernstein and bassist Peter Washington.
Having a guitarist instead of a drummer softenes the texture of the trio sound and make it more intimate. It also makes the sound of the bass come forward so one can appreciate, in this case, the virtuosity of Washington. Charlap's tone is pristine and his solos are sigh-inducingly beautiful. The group's style may seem "old fashioned" on surface, but their interpretations of standards are modern, sophisticated and urban.
As Tony Bennett, who has worked with Bill Charlap among many others, would attest, the Bill Charlap Trio is almost unsurpassed among contemporary mainstream jazz ensembles – no one can bring the Great American Songbook to life in a more exciting and moving way. Venus Records was founded in Japan in 1992 by Tetsuo Hara, who had previously worked as a producer for RCA Victor. The label uses a special mastering process called "Hyper Magnum Sound" for the strictly limited double LP of "I'm Old Fashioned", cut at 45 rpm and pressed on 180 gram vinyl, which produces a very powerful, present sound and is highly appreciated by audiophiles worldwide. A small note: Venus LPs are only pressed once. If the edition is out of print, the corresponding title will be deleted from the catalogue and no longer reproduced. Collectors should therefore not wait too long to order: The releases from the "Venus Masterpiece Collection" are particularly popular!
