"Portraits Of Duke Ellington" by Joe Pass was produced by Norman Granz and first released in 1975 on his label Pablo Records. The legendary jazz guitarist's tribute to Duke Ellington was recorded just a month after Ellington's death and immediately reached number 37 on the jazz album chart. Together with bassist Ray Brown and drummer Bobby Durham, Pass jammed to eight Ellington tracks and "Caravan", which was written by Juan Tizol, one of Duke's most important sidemen. Among the highlights of the album are certainly "In A Mellow Tone", "Don't Get Around Much Anymore" and "I Got It Bad (And That Ain't Good)". Music critic Scott Yanow (AllMusic) was enthusiastic about "Portraits Of Duke Ellington": "The interplay of the three musicians is very impressive and Pass' mastery on the guitar is obvious. He wouldn't have needed the accompanying musicians at all."
