"Throughout his long career, Cedar Walton has been one of hard bop's most lyrical pianists, as evidenced by this 2005 trio session for the Japanese label Venus. Regardless of tempo and approach, it's very easy to sing along to Walton's rousing melodies, whether it's the driving "Cedar's Blues," the lighthearted "Midnight Waltz," or his bossa nova homage to a great Brazilian composer, "Theme For Jobim." However, this does not mean that the remaining titles are just filler material, because there is not a single weak title. "Dear Ruth" is a restrained piece, which is probably named after a special person in Walton's life, as it has a playful yet introverted aura. Walton saves two of his best-known works for last, a complex interpretation of "Bolivia", followed by the breathtaking finale "Ugetsu". Recorded on March 18, 2005 at Avatar Studio, New York (USA), the album was produced by Todd Barkan and mixed and mastered by legendary producer Tetsuo Hara.
Venus Records was founded in Japan in 1992 by Tetsuo Hara, who had previously worked as a producer for RCA Victor. The label uses a special mastering process called "Hyper Magnum Sound" for the strictly limited double LP of "Midnight Waltz", which is cut at 33 rpm and pressed on 180 gram vinyl, which creates a powerful, present sound and is highly appreciated by audiophiles worldwide. A small note: Venus LPs are only pressed once. If the edition is out of print, the corresponding title will be deleted from the catalogue and no longer reproduced. Collectors should therefore not wait too long to order: The releases from the "Venus Masterpiece Collection" are particularly popular!
