"Way Out West" is a testament to one of jazz's most impressive talents: Sonny Rollins! The legendary 1957 album received 5 stars from Rolling Stone, prompting Pitchfork to say, "An album that looks like a novelty and sounds like transcendence." Producer Lester Koenig remembered the hard bop program recorded with Ray Brown (bass) and Shelly Manne (drums) very well at the time. Because in order to do justice to the busy schedules of the musicians, the recordings began at 3:00 a.m. But at 7 a.m., after four hours of intense work, during which the trio had recorded half of the album and should have been exhausted, Sonny said, "I'm hot now!" Shelly, who had been awake for 24 hours, said, "Man, I feel like playing." And Ray, who was just as tired and had another studio appointment in the afternoon, just smiled. In his review on AllMusic, Scott Yanow wrote: "The timeless album established Sonny Rollins as one of jazz's finest tenor saxophonists... at least until John Coltrane surpassed him the following year. Together with bassist Ray Brown and drummer Shelly Manne, Rollins can be heard here at the peak of his career."
The March 7, 1957 recording sessions, which took place at Contemporary Records' studio in Los Angeles, featured Rollins' terrific saxophone playing, which floated over the contributions of former Ella Fitzgerald bassist Brown and legendary West Coast drummer Manne. Rollins had never played with either musician before, but the open encounter gave the trio room for harmonic creativity. From the swinging "I'm An Old Cowhand (From The Rio Grande)" – a skilful blend of country and jazz – written by Johnny Mercer and made famous by Bing Crosby, to Rollins' haunting original composition, the title track "Way Out West", the album redefines jazz improvisation. The music uses a technique called "strolling", which Rollins used for the first time here, in which he soloed only to bass and drums without a pianist or guitarist playing chords.
