Cannonball Adderley and Bill Evans had already played with Miles Davis' sextet on "Kind Of Blue" as well as on the Adderley recordings "Portrait Of Cannonball" and "Jump For Joy". For the recording of "Know What I Mean?", the ingenious alto saxophonist and the no less brilliant pianist and arranger gathered at Bell Sound Studio in New York City together with Percy Heath (bass) and Connie Kay (drums) – the rhythm section of the Modern Jazz Quartet – as well as producer Orrin Keepnews. The album was recorded in three sessions – on January 27, February 21, and March 13, 1961 – and released between October/November 1962 on the Riverside label. For Adderley and Evans, this was a very formative time, which was to be followed by enormous individual success. In a remarkable demonstration of their musical range and sensitivity, the buoyant Adderley and the introspective Evans effortlessly move on a middle ground that brings out both personalities extremely well. Rick Anderson's AllMusic review states, "It's very hard to imagine that a fan of mainstream jazz wouldn't appreciate this excellent recording."
Even the master tapes of the original recordings offer stunning sound quality, which is why Analogue Productions' Riverside LP boxes with the 45 rpm versions of the collected Bill Evans tracks were frenetically acclaimed by audiophiles and the trade media. Myles Astor (Positive-Feedback Online, issue 34) wrote about the sound of the tapes remastered by Kevin Gray and Steve Hoffman at AcousTech Mastering: The 45 rpm reissues are more musical and transparent; the instruments have a greater three-dimensionality and the frequency extremes, especially the lower octaves, have a higher resolution. Get them before they sell out!" Fred Kaplan (Stereophile, November 1, 2017) agrees: "For the most part, these are exceptionally good-sounding recordings, better than anything else you can find!"
Now, finally, Analogue Productions is offering this title from the great box set for sale individually: as a 180-gram double LP, pressed by RTI and also cut at 45 rpm! As a precaution, we would like to point out that the strictly limited LP is a real dream record for audiophiles! It will sell out quickly, so you shouldn't take too much time with the purchase decision!
Of everything Analogue Productions has reissued, few titles have sparked the accolades accorded their 45 RPM versions of Bill Evans titles from his Riverside catalog. Now, they're breaking the titles out from that terrific set for individual sale. These are the audiophile jazz fan's definitive releases for your collection!
In a remarkable display of their musical range and sensitivity, the buoyant alto sax of Cannonball Adderley and introspective piano of Bill Evans move effortlessly toward a middle ground here that shows both to great advantage. Recorded in 1961, the sound quality of these master tapes is breathtaking: a real audiophile dream disc! Featuring Percy Heath on bass and Connie Kay on drums.
