High Quality Pure Analogue 180g Vinyl LP!

"Tonight At Noon" juxtaposes the outtakes from two previous recording sessions: one from 1957 with Jimmy Knepper on trombone, drummer Dannie Richmond, saxophonist Shafi Hadi and pianist Wade Legge, released on The Clown (Atlantic 1260). The second is from 1961 with Booker Ervin and Roland Kirk on saxophone, Knepper, bassist Doug Watkins, Mingus on piano and Richmond on drums, available on "Oh yes" (Atlantic SD-1377).
The two sets differ in their mood, but they are by no means leftovers. While Mingus strives towards the blues in the first session with European harmony and melodic approaches in hard bop tempo (especially on the title track), the second session, with its evening elegance and spatial explorations, seems more like a kind of exercise in avant-garde Ellington with sophisticated harmonies that pave the way to sluggish marches and gospel-like blues. Kirk and Ervin complement each other particularly well, their swing seems to have no boundaries. Mingus' piano playing has its roots deep in the blues, and his sense of tempo and lightness characterizes these pieces, especially "Old" Blue For Walt's Torin.
In these compositions there are already references to later recordings by Mingus. The most beautiful piece comes from the 1957 session and forms the conclusion of the album: the almost 10 minutes of "Passions Of A Woman Loved" feel like an Ellington suite. Although or perhaps because there are a few years between the recordings, you can't escape their magic.
