Born in Newcastle, Australia, Nicki started her musical training at age four with the piano, followed by the flute, soon after. Nicki switched to double bass at the age of 15, and after graduating high school she moved to Sydney to study jazz at the New South Wales Conservatorium of Music. In June 2000, Nicki began performing on Monday nights at the Iridium Jazz Club with the legendary guitarist and inventor, Les Paul. As part of the Les Paul Trio, Nicki worked side-by-side with guitar greats from Paul McCartney, Slash, Steve Miller to fellow Aussie, Tommy Emmanuel. Since then she has performed with such notable musicians as Michel Legrand, Joe Wilder, Randy Brecker, Clark Terry, Jose Feliciano, Bucky Pizzarelli, John Pizzarelli, Dick Hyman, Patti Labelle & the New York Pops Orchestra, Harry Allen, Marlena Shaw, David Krakauer, Ken Peplowski, Ann Hampton Callaway, Bill Mays, Scott Hamilton, Lillian Boutte, Larry Carlton and Houston Person, just to name a few. She has recorded tribute albums to Burt Bacharach, Nat King Cole, Doris Day, Blossom Dearie, Peggy Lee, and the Carpenters.
The Australian musician and composer Nicki Parrott is an absolute all-rounder: first trained on the flute and piano, she later switched to the double bass and achieved mastery and great popularity on this instrument. She performed for a long time at the legendary Les-Paul Sessions at the "Irdium" jazz club as well as in several successful Broadway ensembles and played together with pianist Rachel Z and her sister Lisa Parrott. On "After Midnight", Parrott is accompanied by Steve Russell (piano), Martha Baartz (saxophone), Jim Kelly (guitar) and David Sanders (drums). The album contains a fascinating mixture of jazz and blues elements as well as country – the roots of American music. "After Midnight" was recorded between March 14 and 22, 2025 in Brisbane, Australia, and mixed and mastered by legendary sound engineer Tetsuo Hara.
Venus Records was founded in Japan in 1992 by Tetsuo Hara, who had previously worked as a producer for RCA Victor. The renowned label uses a special mastering process called "Hyper Magnum Sound" for the strictly limited double LP of "After Midnight", cut at 33 rpm and pressed on 180 gram vinyl, which produces a powerful, present sound and is highly appreciated by audiophiles worldwide. A little hint: Venus LP reissues are only pressed once. If this is out of print, the corresponding title will be deleted from the catalogue and no longer reproduced. Collectors should therefore not wait too long to order: The releases from the "Venus Masterpiece Collection" are particularly popular!
