All For You is a tribute to the Nat King Cole Trio by a woman who is better equipped than any other jazz musician of her generation to evoke the spirit of Nat Cole. Diana Krall, who listened eagerly to Cole's records as a child, grew up to be that rarest of birds: a singer-pianist as comfortable and distinctive in one role as the other. 1997 Grammy Nominee.
All for You is a tribute album to the Nat King Cole Trio and was released in 1996 before Diana Krall became a superstar of the jazz scene. Despite the commercially much more successful albums, it is All for You that still inspires the critics the most today. The very personal piano interpretations on a Hamburg Steinway with discreet band accompaniment and an almost eerily present voice testify to Krall's deep fascination for nat King Cole's work as a pianist.
Prior to recording in New York in October 1995, Diana Krall had been on tour with guitarist Russell Malone and bassist Paul Keller for months. She was convinced that the fascination of the work of the Nat King Cole Trio could only be captured if there was really a band playing and not studio musicians thrown together. Only rarely in jazz is it possible to prepare a song precisely and yet accessiblely without drums. Here you can experience a lesson on this topic. Only in the piece Boulevard of Broken Dreams does the drums take over their part.
The ORG pressing is pressed with an extremely large amount of air on four 45 LP pages. Bernie Grundman is responsible for the mastering and everything is packed in an extra-thick folding cover. And just so that all critics of Diana Krall's abilities feel vindicated: Yes, even on this record she has long legs and is pretty. Still, she can play the piano damn well and has a voice that could be described as a mixture of honey with Scotch.
"A superb jazz pianist and an even better singer." - The New York Times
"What we can do in 20 years is listen to a new young singer - pianist and say she reminds us of the legendary Diana Krall." - Village Voice
