Vocalist Valerie Joyce debuted with the May 2006 release of New York Blue on Chesky Records. New York Blue is a collection of classic jazz, standards, and pop tunes that showcase the singer's distinctively smoky vocal sound and nuanced performance. Producer David Chesky says, "Valerie has a great feel for the music and has one of the most unique singing voices I have ever heard."
Pianist Andy Ezrin worked with Valerie on the arrangements for the album's 13 tracks that range from tunes by Cole Porter and Rogers & Hart to Miles Davis to the Beatles. They are joined on the album by musicians Lawrence Feldman on saxophones and Eugene Jackson and Tim Lefevre taking turns on bass for a live recording that is pure Chesky.
The daughter of a Japanese mother and an American father, Valerie Joyce spent her childhood in Japan and began her musical education at the age of six. In 1991, she moved to Tacoma, Washington, and studied piano. During this time she discovered her love for jazz and began singing in the university choir. At an audition at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, she received a scholarship to study vocal jazz, which she rejected. Back in Washington, she devoted herself increasingly to her vocal training and took lessons with Michael Brockman, Jay Clayton and Jerome Gray.
Valerie Joyce recorded her first album Reverie in Seattle in 2002, together with musicians from the region. In 2005, she recorded New York Blue for the label Chesky Records, where she met David and Norman Chesky. The recording was made in St. Peter's Church in Chelsea under sound engineer Nicholas Prout. Fabio Camorani has had the tapes for this LP remastered at 33 1/3 rpm by Miles Showell in the half-speed process and released on his label AudioNautes for the first time on vinyl. The first 500 copies appear with a serial number.
