Chuck Mangione, son of an Italian-American greengrocer, first played hard bop – in a group with his brother, a pianist, before starting a solo career in the mid-1960s. In 1978, he joined a small group of successful elite jazz instrumentalists when his song "Feels So Good" reached No.1 on the US Adult Contemporary charts. Mangione, who is considered the founder of smooth jazz, founded his own record label at the end of the 80s. Then it became a bit quiet around the Grammy winner and honorary doctor of the University of Rochster, New York. But like the proverbial phoenix from the ashes, Mangione returned in 1999 to record "The Feeling's Back" on Chesky Records – the first of two albums for the renowned audiophile label. And once again, Mangione manages the difficult balancing act between jazz, folk and concertante playing form in his usual nonchalance. On "The Feeling's Back", the trumpeter and flugelhorn player interprets his own compositions and songs popular in Brazil such as "Manha De Carneval" with an idiosyncratic melancholic touch. But he also seamlessly follows on from his great successes "Feels So Good", "Tarantella" or "Children Of Sanchez", which sounded from many high-end speakers in the late seventies and early eighties.
Hilarie Grey (JazzTimes) wrote: "Don't let the title fool you – on the likeable new album "The Feeling's Back", Chuck Mangione, the first flugelhorn player in pop music, not only ties in with his hit "Feels So Good" from 1978. While the romantic, sleek lines and pretty melodic hooks that serve as a template for so many other pop instrumentalists are still there, there are also rich world-beat elements and reverent layers of classical jazz that the casual Mangione fan might not expect." We are pleased to present the new edition of this smooth jazz jewel: as a 180-gram LP (33 rpm), pressed for the first time in the sonically superior one-step process!
