At the beginning of the nineties, Michael Jackson had supposedly lost his superstar status a little. The new album project – the artist's eighth solo album and the first production in a long time without the legendary Quincy Jones – was initially titled "Decade". Jackson, who also served as co-producer, later decided on the album name "Dangerous" – perhaps to pay tribute to the slightly changed style that Epic Records was relatively skeptical about. Dangerous saw Michael Jackson go in a new direction. The strategy paid off when the 1991 release debuted at No.1 on the Billboard 200 and sold over 25 million copies worldwide by September 1994. Global sales now near 40 million.
Sourced from the original masters, pressed at Fidelity Record Pressing in California, and housed in a Stoughton gatefold jacket, Mobile Fidelity's numbered-edition 180g 33RPM 2LP set presents Dangerous in audiophile-quality sound for the first time. Jackson's signature vocals come across with incredible transparency and presence, along with the fullness of his range and the soaring heights of his falsetto. You'll also enjoy expansive soundstages, ample instrumental separation, black backgrounds, and broad dynamics.
Between November 1991 and December 1993, a total of nine singles from the album were released, including the hits "Black or White", "In the Closet", "Remember the Time", "Jam", and "Heal the World." Each of the album's nine singles was supported by a unique Michael Jackson short film, later compiled in Dangerous: The Short Films (1993).
Jackson brought guest musicians such as Heavy D, Princess Stéphanie of Monaco, Slash and Wreckx-n-Effect into the studio to record "Dangerous". The album combines New Jack Swing, R&B and Pop with industrial, funk, hip-hop, electronic, gospel, classical and rock elements. Lyrically, Jackson, who wrote or co-composed 12 of the album's 14 songs, mainly devoted himself to socially critical topics such as racism, poverty and multiculturalism. The artistic change that Jackson undertakes on "Dangerous" is also noticeable in a wider range of sounds: he combines catchy pop hooks and choruses with raw, urban underground sounds – quite a musical risk in terms of the intended mainstream audience. But the synthetic basslines, scratching and drum machines were also well received by the older audience. The success of "Dangerous" quickly calmed the minds at Epic Records: The production costs of the album were just under 10 million dollars!
Lovingly mastered from the original tapes and pressed on 180-gram vinyl (33 rpm) in MoFi's Californian studio, the strictly numbered double LP presents this 1991 classic for the first time in captivating audiophile quality: Jackson's characteristic vocal range and the dizzying highs of his falsetto vocals now come into their own with incredible transparency and presence, the spacious sound image and the clear separation of instruments, paired with a pitch-black background and broad dynamics makes "Dangerous" an absolute pleasure. Of course, both records are packaged in a deluxe gatefold sleeve from Stoughton Printing and come with the iconic cover artwork.
