Consequence Top 50 Albums of 2022 - Rated 50/50!
Patient Number 9 is Ozzy Osbourne's 13th solo studio album and a continuation from 2020's top 5 release Ordinary Man, once again produced by Andrew Watt. This 13-track project running nearly over an hour long has the most legendary guests ever on an Ozzy Osbourne release. Three tracks alone - "Patient Number 9", "Degradation Rules", and "One Of Those Days" - feature Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton, and Tony Iommi (Black Sabbath) respectively, not to mention Josh Homme (Queens of The Stone Age), Mike McCready (Pearl Jam), Chad Smith (Red Hot Chili Peppers), Duff McKagan (Guns N' Roses), Robert Trujillo (Metallica), Zakk Wylde (Ozzy's longstanding guitarist from the late '80s) as well as the late Taylor Hawkins (Foo Fighters).
Ozzy again proves, through all trials and tribulations, that he stands as one of the only consistent rock and roll forces in music - to be specific, the only artist to have a Billboard top 10 album in across 50 years in each decade. And his legacy doesn't stop in music, film, tattoo, or global pop culture - his consistent pursuit of entering new cultural zeitgeists continues with the successful launch of his cryptobatz NFTs plus a collaboration with comic legend Todd McFarlane on the video for lead track "Patient Number 9".
Ozzy Osbourne is wasting no time as he recovers from a recent surgery. The Prince of Darkness has released his single "Patient Number 9," the first from his album of the same name.
The all-star, Andrew Watt-produced LP features contributions from the late Jeff Beck (who plays on the title track, recorded before his death in January 2023), Pearl Jam's Mike McCready, Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith, Zakk Wylde, Metallica's Robert Trujillo, Duff McKagan, Eric Clapton and the late Taylor Hawkins. Osbourne's longtime Black Sabbath band mate Tony Iommi also makes his first-ever appearance on an Ozzy solo album.
"The song is about a mental institution," Osbourne said of the title track in a statement. "Having someone like Jeff Beck play on my album is just incredible, a total honor. There's no other guitar player who plays like him and his solo on ‘Patient Number 9' is just jaw-dropping."
"Having worked with Ozzy in the past, I jumped at another opportunity to do so again...especially on the music side this time," comic book artist Todd McFarlane, whose video accompanies the lead single, said in a statement. "In the harsh business called the music industry, any creative person who's sustained a multi-decades career has shown the skill, talent and tenacity that will always garner my admiration. Ozzy has shown many of us creative folks that it's indeed possible to make a living doing what you love for nearly an entire lifetime. Go, Ozzy!"
The new track comes after Osbourne shared an update to fans that he was "home from the hospital recuperating comfortably" from a surgery that his wife Sharon had said would "determine the rest of his life."
"Your love means the world to him," Sharon wrote at the time. She also shared a throwback photo and added, "He's feeling good!"
Ozzy has been battling Parkinson's disease for several years now and has opened up in the past about his trouble with mobility, partly due to a 2003 ATV accident.
...Ozzy sounds hypercharged throughout Patient Number 9, continuing the unlikely late-in-the-game comeback he began on Ordinary Man, and besting that album by taking more chances. - Fred Thomas, AllMusic.com, 4/5 stars (The AllMusic 2022 Year in Review - Favorite Metal Albums)
