50th Anniversary Edition Vinyl LP!
Half-Speed Master of Steven Wilson's 2012 Stereo Remix!
Reproduced in the Original Legendary 12-Page Newspaper Package!
The band, founded in 1967, still has an exceptional status in the music scene. One reason for this is certainly the ever-present flute of frontman Ian Anderson, his distinctive voice, as well as the band's sophisticated songwriting. Did the first three albums already indicated the band's potential, in 1971 the Brits made it for the first time with but for the first time with "Aqualung" they managed to perfect their very own style.
To celebrate its 50th anniversary, Jethro Tull's masterful Thick as a Brick has been reproduced in its original format with the legendary 12-page newspaper package. The vinyl is a half-speed master of Steven Wilson's 2012 remix.
Released in 1972, Thick as a Brick was the group's fifth studio album and is noted for containing only one song (in 2 parts). Deliberately crafted in the style of a concept album, the original packaging was designed like a fold-out newspaper, and claims to be a musical adaptation of an epic poem by an 8-year old genius, though the lyrics were actually written by the band's frontman, Ian Anderson. Rolling Stone magazine called Thick as a Brick "one of rock's most sophisticated and ground-breaking products."
On "Thick As A Brick", which was released only one year later, the band went even further even went one step further. It consists of a single song, which is spread over two sides of the LP sides (respectively two tracks on the CD). The arrangements are even more balanced, the transitions between the different song fragments much more fluid and the and the melody line is simply sensational. The song in poem form (written by Gerald Bostock - Anderson's alter ego) is complemented by an immediately catchy and by a melody that immediately catches the ear and keeps returning, so that despite all the instrumental instrumental subtleties that the album contains, there is always a common thread to to which one can orient oneself as a listener. The album immediately reached number 1 in the American album charts and has also had great success internationally.
Formed in 1967, Jethro Tull went on to sell over 60 million albums worldwide and become one of the most commercially successful and eccentric progressive-rock bands.
"A masterpiece in the annals of progressive rock, and one of the few works of its kind that still holds up decades later. Mixing hard rock and English folk music with classical influences, set to stream-of-consciousness lyrics so dense with imagery that one might spend weeks pondering their meaning - assuming one feels the need to do so - the group created a dazzling tour de force, at once playful, profound, and challenging, without overwhelming the listener. The original LP was the best-sounding, best-engineered record Tull had ever released, easily capturing the shifting dynamics between the soft all-acoustic passages and the electric rock crescendos surrounding them." - Bruce Eder, AllMusic
