Will of the People is the ninth studio album by the English rock band Muse, released through Warner Records and Helium-3 on 26 August 2022. Self-produced by the band, it is a genre-hopping album that Matthew Bellamy described as "a greatest hits album – of new songs". "Won't Stand Down", "Compliance", "Will of the People", and "Kill or Be Killed" were released as singles before the album was released, and "You Make Me Feel Like It's Halloween" was released as a single the same day the album came out, followed by the final single "Ghosts (How Can I Move On)" featuring Italian singer-songwriter Elisa.
The album received generally positive reviews and became Muse's seventh consecutive number-one album in the UK. A world tour in support of the album, the Will of the People World Tour, began in April 2022 and concluded in November 2023. It was ranked as the #17 best guitar album of 2022 by Guitar World readers.
Actually, Muse's record company "only" wanted to have the track list for a potential best-of compilation. But the trio around singer and guitarist Matt Bellamy somehow didn't feel like that. Instead, the band has written new songs without further ado, each of which could have been on one of the previous Muse albums. So »Will Of The People« became a best-of retrospective, so to speak, only with brand new songs.
The pieces sound correspondingly colorfully mixed. The title track is a stomping glam rock number, whose rhythm is reminiscent of Marilyn Manson's "The Beautiful People" at first glance. On "Kill Or Be Killed", Muse sound more metallic than ever before. At the latest when Matt Bellamy's inimitable vocals begin, every listener knows immediately who is booming out of the speakers. And the grandiose melodies so typical of the band can also be found in abundance on "The Will Of The People".
After the previous album "Simulation Theory" was deliberately more fictional in terms of content and transported a lot of eighties nostalgia, it was clear to Muse that her next album should revolve more around current global political issues again. There has been no shortage of such in recent years. On social media in March, the band revealed: "Will Of The People" was influenced by the growing uncertainty and instability in the world. The pandemic, new wars in Europe, mass protests and riots, an attempted coup, the faltering of Western democracy, rising authoritarianism, forest fires and natural disasters, and the destabilization of the global order – all of these have influenced this album."
Fortunately, "Will Of The People" doesn't sound as depressing as you might expect from this list. But Muse have obviously once again processed a lot in their music and accordingly there is a lot to discover.
