The self-titled solo debut of the most musically experimental member of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young is a masterpiece! Bluesy rock, Latin American grooves and the pure, unfiltered energy of Stephen Stills made the album, released in November 1970, his songs are certainly in a league with those of the other members, and it's chiefly on his solo albums that Stills's own personality comes through, an immediate success: worldwide chart placements in the top ten and the hit "Love The One You're With" ensured that the album, produced by Bill Halverson, was quickly certified gold. In 1974, it was ranked number 70 on the NME's list of the greatest albums of all time, and was later included in the legendary book "1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die." The participation of Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton certainly contributed to the great success of the album.
Stills' songs are in no way inferior to the works of the other band members of CSNY, but here his very own personality is expressed: Still's genre wanderings never seem disjointed. The production is warm and haunting, with Stills playing most of the instruments himself. The second single – "Sit Yourself Down" – is a good example of the atmosphere of the album: Here he not only plays guitar – he literally wrestles it, lays his virtuosity over structures that sound both carefully crafted and effortlessly cool!
Stills' Top 20 hit "Love the One You're With" was the lead single from the album, released in November 1970. The album's other smash, "Sit Yourself Down," the seccond single, reached the Top 40, peaking at No.37. Stills doesn't just play guitar here — he wrestles it into submission, layering his virtuosity over an album that sounds both meticulously crafted and effortlessly cool.
Recorded in the wake of CSNY's success, Stephen Stills proves that while Crosby and Nash leaned into their harmonies and Young wandered off into his own world, Stills was busy crafting something bolder, grittier, and sonically rich.
Stills jumps from folk to blues to Latin to orchestral balladry, but it never feels disjointed. The production is warm and immersive, with Stills playing most of the instruments himself (because of course he does). If Déjà Vu was a collaborative masterpiece, Stephen Stills is proof that he could do just fine on his own.
