High Quality Pure Analogue 180g Virgin Vinyl LP!
AAA Recording!
A high-speed car chase between a Dodge Charger and a Ford Mustang, with super-cop Bullitt at the wheel, who forces the hitman off the road and into a petrol station, which explodes and incinerates him. Prior to that, harsh clashes of metal, hubcaps flying all over the place, and the chief character, played by Steve McQueen, who grimly changes gears and hurtles through the streets of San Francisco, wheels screaming and rubber burning. That was how Hollywood staged one of the longest and most dramatic car chases, long before the days of the Anti-Blocking-System and Anti-Slide-Control.
Very up-to-date and just as exciting as the screenplay is the music Lalo Schifrin wrote for the film, which embeds the characters, places and events in a musical context. For example, "Bullitt": the metrically angular main theme portrays a mysterious, cool character who sums up a situation with keen alertness and then makes his attack with the speed of lightning.
Initially the music travels through easy-going Latin terrain. But gradually the rhythmic texture changes and takes a rougher path, with clicks, knocks and hammering. Legendary flute lines create a compensatory placidness with airy clouds floating above the sharp mix. A really special track is "Shifting Gears": here you can listen to Schifrin tuning the car, how he manipulates a jammed springy bossa to take on the sound of clean, smooth-running rock.
The fierce racing battle of a Dodge Charger against a Ford Mustang, occupied by the super bull Bullitt, who bowls nasty sinisters off the track and leads them directly to their cremation. In front of it, menacing chatter of countless flying hubcaps and lead actor Steve McQueen, who grimly stirs in the manual transmission and drifts through Frisco's mountain roads with screeching rubbers – this is how Hollywood staged one of the longest and most dramatic hunts with potent tin bodies when the electronic instruments ABS and slip control were still playing in the future.
On the other hand, Lalo Schifrin's music for the film is acoustically fully present and just as tingling as the plot, embedding people, spaces and events in a musical context. Example "Bullitt": Already the metrically nested main theme brings a character into the light in mysterious coolness, who scans every situation with sensitive alertness and switches to offensive at lightning speed.
The musical scenes only initially take place on loose Latin terrain. The rhythmic structure gradually condenses into harder pavement via clicking, throbbing and hammering. The legendary flute movement creates balancing mildness by placing airy clouds over the sharpened mix. Listening tip "Shifting Gears": Here Schifrin can be listened to while tuning, as he pimps up a hooked springy bossa quickly and cleanly to round running rock sound.
