Mathieu Désy is a versatile artist: he feels just as at home in classical music as he does in jazz and pop music. Désy's virtuosity and rhythm now adorn more than fifty albums, which he has recorded as a leader and sideman. The artist redefines the double bass by playing bass lines, chords and melodies simultaneously on a five-string tuned to D, thus creating an orchestral sonority with just a single instrument. As a respected educator, composer and producer, he brings all his creative power to his latest project: "Vents Contre Airs" (Crosswinds) is a refined and contemplative jazz album, which also features clarinetist Charles Papasoff and percussionist Paul Picard. The album is the continuation of "Contrebasse & Marées" – a minimalist and poetic soundscape built on warm musical currents and the spirit of friendship. "Vents Contre Airs" contains six original compositions by Désy as well as pieces by Papasoff, Manuel de Falla and an interpretation of a song by Feist.
