Great Performances, Great Sound & A World Premiere On Hybrid SACD!
Reference Recordings proudly presents the Symphony No.4 of Johannes Brahms, with James MacMillan's Larghetto for Orchestra, in exceptional performances from Manfred Honeck and the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. These works were recorded live in beautiful and historic Heinz Hall, now celebrating its 50th Anniversary season.
Maestro Honeck honors us again with his meticulous music notes, in which he gives us great insight into his unique interpretation as well as the history and musical structure of Brahms's final and beloved tragic symphony.
This recording by the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Manfred Honeck is released on the occasion of the return to live concerts with full orchestra in the 2021/2022 event season. Brahms' Symphony No.4 and MacMillan's Larghetto for orchestra were recorded at the Heinz Hall for the Performing Arts, which celebrates its 50th anniversary this season as the home of the Pittsburgh Symphony.
"Brahms' Fourth is a tremendous work that not only unfolds sonority but also reveals deep feeling. Their versatility enriches and their multiple shades are challenging. What justifies presenting this powerful symphony together with James MacMillan's Larghetto for orchestra is that both are deeply personal works that bear witness to profound color and beauty," says Manfred Honeck, Music Director of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra.
The recording is complemented by Manfred Honeck's detailed musical notes in the booklet, which give an insight into his unique interpretation as well as the history and musical structure of Brahms' last symphony.
James MacMillan is the preeminent Scottish composer of his generation. His Larghetto for Orchestra was commissioned by the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra in honor of the tenth anniversary of Manfred Honeck as Music Director. It had its world premiere performance in October 2017. This album contains the world premiere recording. The composer generously includes his own album notes about this solemn and repentant, but ultimately hopeful work.
