Thrilling Live Performances in Brilliant Audiophile Sound!
"I myself consider the symphony to be the best, but especially the most sincere of all my works. I love them as I have never loved any of my other musical creations," Tchaikovsky said of his Sixth Symphony. With an "enigmatic program" and an unusual sequence of movements, the Russian composer has created a unique work that has become one of his most popular orchestral pieces due to the high emotionality and rhythmic vitality of the music. But the Sixth Symphony, later nicknamed the "Pathétique", did not begin its triumphal march through the concert halls until its creator was no longer alive: only a few days after its premiere in October 1893, Tchaikovsky died at the age of only 53.
This recording from 2015 is a brilliant interpretation of the Pathétique, performed by the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Manfred Honeck. Since the 2008/2009 season, Manfred Honeck has been musical director of the world-famous orchestra and his successful work in Pittsburgh is extensively documented by recordings for the labels Reference Recordings and Exton. This release is the fifth by Honeck and the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra in the "Pittsburgh Live!" series by Reference Recordings. Also included is the first recording of "Rusalka Fantasy", an orchestral suite from Dvorak's opera "Rusalka".
Of his Symphony No.6, Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky wrote, "But I absolutely consider it to be the best, and in particular, the most sincere of all my creations. I love it as I have never loved any of my other musical offspring." Tchaikovsky's Symphony No.6 was the composer's final completed symphony. He led the premiere performance in October of 1893, only nine days before his death.
This release also includes the world premiere recording of the "Rusalka Fantasy". This orchestral suite is taken from Dvorak's opera by Manfred Honeck and Tomas Ille. Performing these works is the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, which has a long and rich history of touting the world's finest musicians and conductors.
This is the fifth release in the well-received Pittsburgh Live! series.
"Good barely covers it. All eight of the releases that the Pittsburgh forces have brought out on Reference Recordings, with the aid of microphone whizzes from Soundmirror, come with the highest of recommendations."Four have received nominations for the Grammy for best orchestral performance. One, of Shostakovich's Symphony No.5 and Barber's Adagio for Strings, won in 2018." - David Allen, The New York Times
