The Absolute Sound 40th Anniversary Best Sounding Music!
TAS Rated 5/5 Music, 4/5 Sonics in the March 2011 Issue of The Absolute Sound!
Oliver Nelson is primarily known as a big band leader and arranger, less as a saxophonist and organizer of smaller ensembles. With "The Blues and The Abstract Truth" he triumphed as a musician and immortalized himself in jazz history with the classic "Stolen Moments".
In addition to Nelson, the outstanding sextet consists of trumpeter Freddie Hubbard, alto saxophonist Eric Dolphy, pianist Bill Evans, bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Roy Haynes.
Recorded in 1961, The Blues and Abstract Truth is Oliver Nelson's most acclaimed album.
As Oliver Nelson is known primarily as a big band leader and arranger, he is lesser known as a saxophonist and organizer of small ensembles. Blues And The Abstract Truth is his triumph as a musician for the aspects of not only defining the sound of an era with his all-time classic "Stolen Moments," but on this recording, assembling one of the most potent modern jazz sextets ever. Lead trumpeter Freddie Hubbard is at his peak of performance, while alto saxophonists Nelson and Eric Dolphy (Nelson doubling on tenor) team to for an unlikely union that was simmered to perfection. Bill Evans (piano), Paul Chambers (bass) and Roy Haynes (drums) can do no wrong as a rhythm section.
This title is a SHM-SACD. This format is the further development of the single-layer SACD and uses a particularly light-transparent plastic (Super High Material). It achieves a significantly better readability of the pit-land structures on the surface than is possible with hybrid SACDs. Universal's SHM-SACDs are generally re-digitized from the master tapes of the albums to DSD without any changes. SHM-SACDs can be played on any SACD player. Please do not use L'Art du Son or alcohol-based cleaning products. – Attention: All tracks are designed by Universal Music as limited edition collectibles for the Japanese market.
"....it features some of the most original writing, gorgeous and simpatico ensemble playing, and virtuoso improvisations ever put on tape.... The palate of tone colors is absolutely breathtaking, the dynamic range free and wide. The instruments are arrayed across a transparent and seamless soundstage, with near-perfect tonal balance and an immediacy I have never before encountered." - Wayne Garcia, The Absolute Sound, March 2011
