Duke Ellington & John Coltrane SHM-SACD

In an article by Gene Lees in the monthly magazine, Jazz, there is an intimation that Coltrane's playing may have "undergone another spurt of rapid evolution" as a result of this relatively brief association with Ellington. It is more than possible, for Duke's catalytic influence is unique in jazz. The one certainty is that there is warm, exciting music here which will pleasantly surprise Coltrane and Ellington fans both.
"Duke Ellington & John Coltrane" is a jazz classic from 1962. The up-and-coming saxophone talent plays here at the side of the established pianist. One might think that this combination led to a dynamic but tense interplay between the two generations of jazz. Instead, there was a relaxed, respectful, mutually space-giving meeting of like-minded musical souls.
Producer Bob Thiele decided against inviting Ellington's sidemen for the recordings. The two protagonists are accompanied by bassist Jimmy Garrison, drummer Elvin Jones, bassist Aaron Bell and drummer Sam Woodyard.
This title is an SHM-SACD. This format is the further development of the single-layer SACD and uses a particularly light-transparent plastic (S uper High Material). This results in significantly better readability of the pit-land structures on the surface than is possible with hybrid SACDs. Universal's SHM-SACDs are generally digitized from the master tapes of the albums to DSD without any changes. SHM-SACDs can be played on any SACD player.
