In 2016, Macy Gray came to the Hirsch Center, a former Roman Catholic church in Brooklyn, to record "Stripped" – one of the most unusual and extraordinary albums of her discography. The project was put together by Chesky Records and recorded in two days, with Gray joined by guitarist Russell Malone, bassist Daryl Johns, drummer Ari Hoenig and trumpeter Wallace Roney, all absolute jazz greats with impressive credentials.
On "Stripped", Gray presents reinterpretations of the most important titles from her back catalogue, including "I Try" and "Sweet Baby". The album also features some new songs such as the rousing "Annabelle" and jazzy reinterpretations of Metallica's "Nothing Else Matters" as well as Bob Marley's legendary "Redemption Song". With its stripped-down arrangements that show off her inimitable voice, 'Stripped' shows a previously unknown side of Macy Gray. "Stripped" was Gray's first jazz album and became a huge commercial, critically acclaimed success. The album immediately debuted at number 3 on the Billboard Jazz Albums chart.
