Bassist Sideman Turns Band Leader In Jazz SACD!
Bassist Bill Crow is better-known as being sideman in the band rather than a leader. His dreams definitely came true in this, his second CD for Venus.
Selections are composed of standards, classic jazz compositions, and a pair of originals.
Bassist Bill Crow became known for his work as a sideman for many well-known jazz personalities. His second recording for Venus Records proves how good he was as a leader. "Jazz Anecdotes" is the sister album to the hit album "Goodbye Birdland" and is based on Crow's book, in which he collected countless anecdotes about jazz musicians.
Together with tenor saxophonist Carmen Leggio, guitarist Joe Cohn and drummer David Jones, Crow leads his quartet through twelve pieces, including standards, classic jazz compositions and some originals. The upbeat recording of Oscar Pettiford's "Bohemia After Dark" features great solos from every band member. Crow's arrangement of "Round Midnight" is played at a faster tempo than usual with a bossa nova rhythm, while Leggio's supple tenor saxophone swings like crazy on Lester Young's "Tickletoe."
Venus Records was founded in 1992 by Tetsuo Hara, who had previously worked as a producer for RCA Victor. The label uses a special mastering process called "Hyper Magnum Sound" for the limited SACD (DSD, Non-Hybrid) of "Jazz Anectodes", which produces a very powerful, present sound and is highly appreciated by audiophiles worldwide.
"The buoyant take of Oscar Pettiford's 'Bohemia After Dark' has great solos by each member of the band, while Leggio and Cohn trade tasty licks during 'In a Mellotone.' Crow's arrangement of 'Round Midnight' is played at a brisker than usual tempo with a bossa nova rhythm, while Leggio's mellow tenor sax swings like mad in Lester Young's 'Tickletoe.' 'On the Alamo' is a once-popular tune that has long since fallen out of favor, though the quartet's delightful exploration of this old chestnut works beautifully. 'Mack the Knife' is in danger of overexposure, but this fresh interpretation does not settle for the predictable paths. Crow's composition, 'Jazz Anecdotes,' salutes the spirit of Count Basie's band, while his 'Tarrytown' is a lush ballad showcasing the leader first...the intimate sound of this very well-knit quartet throughout the sessions make this a warmly recommended title for fans of swing, bop, or cool jazz." - Ken Dryden, allmusic.com
