Fred Hersch & The Fred Hersch Trio Dancing In The Dark Hybrid Multi-Channel & Stereo SACD

Born in Cincinnati, USA, jazz pianist and composer Fred Hersch began playing the piano at the age of four and attended the New England Conservatory in Boston until his graduation in 1977. Later he moved to New York, where he quickly became a sought-after pianist. Significantly influenced by Bill Evans, Hersch made a name for himself as a border crosser between jazz and classical music and initially performed as a sideman for musicians such as Stan Getz, Joe Henderson, Gary Burton, Art Farmer and Charlie Haden. Soon Hersch also attracted international attention with his own compositions, band projects and especially with his solo programs. He was the first musician to have the honour of performing his solo piano program for a week in the famous Village Vanguard. Hersch has been nominated ten times for a Grammy, both for Best Instrumental Jazz Recording and Best Instrumental Composition. "Fred Hersch Solo" (2015) won a coup de coeur from the Charles Cros Academy as well as the Grand Prix of the French Académie du Jazz. In 2003 he received a Guggenheim Fellowship for his compositions. In 2016, the Jazz Journalists Association named him "Jazz Pianist of the Year".
Fred Hersch debuted in 1991 with a quintet record called "Forward Motion" for Chesky Records. He reduced the band to a trio for the recording of "Dancing In The Dark", which he recorded together with bassist Drew Gress and drummer Tom Rainey. "Dancing In The Dark" is a remarkable exploration of the Great American Songbook and offers spectacular reinterpretations of timeless songs such as "I Fall In Love Too Easily", "For All We Know" or "My Funny Valentine". With their almost telepathic interplay, the Fred Hersch Trio shows new perspectives on well-known evergreens and proves how jazz and its improvisational culture can transform familiar melodies and harmonic structures into new and exciting listening experiences. "Dancing In The Dark" was awarded a Grammy nomination and remains one of the most important albums in Chesky Records' back catalogue.
