Clark Terry Portraits Hybrid Multi-Channel & Stereo SACD

First released in 1989 by Chesky Records, "Portraits" is a testament to the extraordinary talent of legendary trumpeter, flugelhorn player and jazz educator Clark Terry. "Portraits," the first of four albums for the audiophile label, was recorded at a time when the St. Louis-born horn player, 68 years old and recognized worldwide as a highly respected jazz musician. Clark Terry had already released 35 albums (!) and could look back on an impressive career, which included collaborations with legends such as Duke Ellington, Charles Mingus, Quincy Jones and Dizzy Gillespie and underlined his musical importance. For "Portraits", which was produced by David Chesky himself, Terry put together an excellent quartet consisting of pianist Don Friedman, bassist Victor Gaskin and drummer Lewis Nash. Terry alternated between flugelhorn and muted trumpet and occasionally showed his athletic scat singing talent, which comes into play in his composition "Finger Filibuster".
The quartet plays a mix of well-known jazz standards such as "Pennies From Heaven" and, certainly highlights, the Louis Armstrong favorites "When It's Sleepy Time Down South" and "Sugar Blues" – a nostalgic bow to New Orleans jazz. Scott Yanow (AllMusic) writes about "Portraits": "Terry's positive and instantly recognizable sound, as well as his creative, bop-influenced ideas, combine to create a very accessible style... All the songs are tributes to different trumpeters, and some, like "Pennies From Heaven," "Little Jazz," and "I Don't want to Be Kissed," weren't played too often by the flugelhornist; the result is fresh and very inspired." We're thrilled that Chesky Records is finally re-releasing this jazz gem – this time as a sonically superior hybrid SACD!
EvoSound has remastered the album using hi-resolution digital transfers from the original analogue master tapes and is now available as a hybrid Stereo SACD. The hybrid SACD plays on both SACD and regular CD Players.
