Otto Klemperer leads the Philharmonia Orchestra through Antonín Dvorák's Symphony No.9 in E minor, Op.95 "From the New World" and Franz Schubert's Symphony No.8 in B minor, D.759 "Unfinished." Recorded at Kingsway Hall, London on October 30 – November 2, 1963 (Tracks 1–4) and February 4 & 6, 1963 (Tracks 5–6).
The German conductor and composer Otto Klemperer (14.5.1885 – 6.7.1973) is certainly one of the great conductors of the 20th century. Klemperer's recording of Dvorak's "Symphony No. 9" ("From the New World") and Schubert's "Symphony No. 8" ("The Unfinished") with the Philharmonia Orchestra is particularly appreciated for its clarity, attention to detail and Klemperer's characteristic approach to tempo and phrasing. Many reviewers emphasize the depth and expressiveness of his readings. The Dvorak recording is characterized by its powerful and detailed interpretation, with the bass lines being particularly well elaborated. The Schubert recording is perceived as graceful and fluid, with a balance between discipline and humanity in Klemperer's conducting.
"Otto Klemperer's "New World" has always been one of the best recordings, a fiery performance with authentic Czech flair in the balance of woodwinds. It is also not unusually slow, and where the tempo is comparatively leisurely, as in the Scherzo, Klemperer more than makes up for it with the clarity of the imitative changes of the main theme. Have Dvorák's bass lines ever been heard more clearly? Klemperer's unsentimental interpretation of the Largo captures the melodic purity and serenity of the music better than almost anyone else" - David Hurwitz, ClassicsToday.com
"The amazing thing is that the Klemperer recording is as good as it is. Symphony No. 5 begins better than any other." - Gramophone.co.uk
