Classical guitarist Siegfried Behrend performs works by Joaquín Rodrigo, Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco, Roberto de Visée, Johann Sebastian Bach, Fernando Sor, Mauro Giuliani, and Hermann Ambrosius, in addition to his own Sonatina on Japanese Folk Songs. Recorded at Jesus-Christus-Kirche, Berlin on May 9-13, 1966 (Tracks 1-6, with the Berlin Philharmonic conducted by Reinhard Peters) and UFA Studio, Deutsche Grammophon, Berlin on May 31-June 2, 1966 (Tracks 7-29).
The German guitarist, composer and publisher Siegfried Behrend (19.11.1933-20.9.1990) made a significant contribution through his commitment to the fact that music for guitar and other plucked instruments was given a firm place in the public musical life of the Federal Republic of Germany. More than 120 recordings, more than 250 of his own compositions, countless radio and television productions, premieres of important compositions describe the path of the artist, who also committed himself to constant development. The 20-year-old Behrend was offered the German premiere of the famous "Concierto De Aranjuez", and he helped the work, which was hardly known at the time, to triumph through the concert halls of the world, which culminates in the present recording in the Jesus Christ Church in Berlin – together with the Berlin Philharmonic under the direction of Reinhard Peters.
In 1963 Behrend presented the television programme "The History of the Guitar", and in 1971 a thirteen-part television programme about the guitar and its use in chamber music entitled "Instruments - Sounds - Structures" on Hessischer Rundfunk. From 1960 to 1973 he led the Saarländisches Zupforchester (SZO) and from 1968 to 1990 the Deutsches Zupforchester (DZO). In the seventies, he organized the "International Master Classes for Artistic Guitar Playing" in Riedenburg, Bavaria, and in the following years he promoted numerous young guitarist artists as a teacher and mentor, including Michael Tröster, Matthias Henke and Martin Maria Krüger, with whom he performed internationally as the German Guitar Duo in later years.
