Country legend Willie Nelson got his big break when he was signed to Atlantic Records in 1973. Thanks to the freedom the label offered him, Nelson was able to record "Shotgun Willie" with the artistic self-determination he had long wanted; the unconventional sound and the honest lyrics were well received by critics and fans alike.
The album laid the foundation for his rise to become one of the most influential and iconic figures in the history of country music. The recording was one of the first albums of "Outlaw Country," a new subgenre that provided an alternative to the conservative limitations of the Nashville sound that was prevalent in the genre at the time.
