Shostakovich's "Symphony No.10" was composed in the year after Stalin's death and became a symbol of artistic liberalization in the Russian composer's oeuvre. The "Symphony No.15", his last symphony, is characterized by interesting quotations from various works. Haitink, who has completed the composer's entire symphony cycle, revives the worldview of both works with his unique perspective and meticulous ensemble. The conductor Bernard Haitink, who died in 2021, was a true conductor of the century. Born in the Netherlands, he studied at the Amsterdam Conservatory and initially played as a violinist in various orchestras. In 1954 and 1955 he learned to conduct under Ferdinand Leitner and was appointed chief conductor of the Concertgebouw Orchestra in 1961. In 1967 he was appointed first conductor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra. Other stations included the Royal Opera House in London, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Staatskapelle Dresden and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.
The recording, originally released by Decca, is re-released by Universal Music Japan with a high-resolution DSD mastering (Classic Sound, UK, 2025) in brilliant sound quality – as a strictly limited Japan SHM SACD (single-layer) with OBI-Stripe!
This title is an SHM-SACD. This format is a further development of the single-layer SACD and uses a particularly light-transparent plastic (Super High Material). It achieves a much better readability of the pit-land structures on the surface than is possible with hybrid SACDs. Universal's SHM SACDs are generally re-digitized from the albums' master tapes to DSD without any changes. SHM SACDs can be played on any SACD player. Please do not use L'Art du Son or alcohol-based cleaning products. – Attention: All tracks are designed by Universal Music as collector's items in limited edition for the Japanese market.
