Undercurrent is a classic jazz album by pianist Bill Evans with guitarist Jim Hall, originally released in 1962. The repertoire includes jazz favorite "My Funny Valentine" and other jazz standards, as well as Hall original "Romain."
Duet albums were rare in 1962 and encounters of this quality are still very rare. Bill Evans and Jim Hall, two giants of modern jazz, were at their creative peak at the time. Evans led his own trio, and Hall was working with Sonny Rollins' quartet at the time. "Undercurrent" is the first of two excellent albums, recorded during two sessions that took place on May 14, 1961 and April 24, 1962 – both at the Sound Makers, New York. Usually, intuitive musical relationships develop over a period of several years, but here are two musicians at work who understand each other from the beginning. After the tragic death of his previous musical partner, the virtuoso bassist Scott Le Faro at the age of only 23, Bill Evans was particularly electrified and looking for a new musical direction. His condition complemented perfectly with Hall's enormous talent and great technique, whose highly developed sense of rhythm and harmony shines on this album. What makes this recording special is the almost telepathic anticipation of the musicians: a constant exchange of ideas, in which each reacts to the other with obvious ease – simply a brilliant jazz album of great depth and impressive atmosphere!
